The Real Care Baby Project which helps young men and women make responsible choices about becoming parents. The Real Care Baby cries and needs regular feeding, burping, diapering and rocking. Daily care schedules are programmed into a computerized box in the back of the baby. Middle and high school teens care for the life-like baby between two and seven days. They have a real appreciation of the difficulties of caring for a baby after the short exposure of caring for a baby.
Youth Connection also provides doll manikins that show the effects of drug and alcohol usage during pregnacy which results in drug and alcohol dependent babies at birth. These babies are severely underweight at birth and at high risk of severe health issues. We also have a shaken baby model that shows the brain damage that can occur from excessive shaking of a baby during rage. The doll has a clear plastic covering on the head that displays red lights whenever shaken sufficiently to cause brain damage.
Professionals in the areas of child development, Family & Consumer Sciences, health, life skills, social services and even corrections education are using Real Care Baby for infant care lessons, parenting education and child development. It's also used as a teen pregnancy prevention strategy. The Real Care Program offers a realistic experience and also encourages healthy choices, personal goal setting, and dialogue with parents/guardians for young participants. The Realityworks brand of hands-on, interactive learning has been proven effectiv by independent research.
